Consultancy

Rick Snell has been used as a consultant on a number of projects. He can be hired individually or through UTAS Commercialisation Unit  the commercial arm of the University of Tasmania. He has recently completed a 7 week consultancy in Cambodia with USAID and PACT Cambodia.See US Embassy write up and story in UTAS Law Alumni News .

Teaching

Rick has been invited to teach courses or present lectures and workshops at a number of Law Schools, Journalism and Political Science courses in various countries. He loves to teach and is regarded as a thought provoking, enthustiastic and challenging teacher.

He has been recognisied nationally twice for his excellence in teaching.

Other Activities

Rick and his family have been operating a book stall at Hobart's famous Salamanca Market on Saturdays for the past 21 years. Visit us at Stall 145 when visting Hobart.

Rick Snell

Rick Snell is a senior lecturer in law at the University of Tasmania. His research, ideas and teaching have been influential within Australia and internationally.

He has several research interests including government transparency, public sector governance, comparative administrative law (especially freedom of information and ombudsman) and the media.

Rick is a former member of the Tasmanian Administrate Review Advisory Council which advised the Tasmanian Attorney-General on Administrative Law matters. He was an elected and active member of the governing Council of the University of Tasmania from 2003-2006.

Born on the West Coast of Tasmania Rick completed a combined Arts (Honours)/Law degree at the University of Tasmania in 1982. His political science honours thesis was on the political systems of Nauru and Western Samoa. He then worked for several years in the Australian Commonwealth Public Service (mostly in the Australian Taxation Office) before returning to the University as a part-time Political Science Tutor in 1988. In 1990 he was employed as a tutor in the Law School. In 1994 he completed his Political Science Masters degree on Western Samoa politics.

After joining the Law School he quickly built an international reputation in the area of Freedom of Information and within six years was awarded a Teaching Excellence Award and was profiled as one of the 48 Australian  academics with  exemplary or noteworthy approaches to teaching (Ballantyne et al Reflecting on University Teaching Academics’ Stories 1997). Since that time he has developed a growing reputation in the area of Ombudsman studies.

Rick Snell is a much sought after public speaker - he has delivered talks in all the capital cities of Australia and has been invited to speak and present seminars in Canada, New Zealand, Malaysia, Indonesia, South Africa, Philippines, Ireland, United Kingdom, United States, Mexico, Cambodia and Fiji. He is also a well known commentrator in the Australian media on various issues.

He was editor of the FoI Review for 10 years and is currently on the boards of Open Government and Comparative Media Law.

He has won a number of important teaching awards:
